This collection contains the Civil War correspondence of Richard Henry Watkins of Prince Edward County, Va. The bulk of the papers consists of letters, 1861-1864, between Watkins and his wife, Mary Purnell (Dupuy) Watkins (1839-1921), concerning his service in the 3rd Virginia Cavalry Regiment, C.S.A., and her life in Prince Edward County. Watkins' letters describe life in camp, and his unit's participation in the battles of Chancellorsville, Bristoe Station, and Spotyslvania Court House, as well as in the Peninsular, Maryland, 1864 Shenandoah Valley, and Petersburg campaigns. Other correspondents in the collection include Maria Lucinda (Dupuy) Anderson (1841-1926), Henry Watkins Edmunds (1838- 1926), and Nathaniel Venable Watkins (1831-1889).
